The capital city of the state of Connecticut is Hartford. Until the state disbanded county government in 1960, Hartford formed the seat of Hartford County. Based on the Census of 2010, the city's population was about 124,800, making it the 7th largest city in New England. It is the 2nd most populous city situated on the Connecticut River, that is the biggest river in New England. The city of Hartford ranks the state's 3rd largest city, coming in after the coastal cities of New Haven and Bridgeport. With a population of 1,212,381, Greater Hartford was the largest metropolitan area within the state of Connecticut, based on the census of the year 2010.
Dutch explorer Adriaen Block, visited the region during the year 1614. Soon after, trade was set up at Good Hope or Fort Goede Hoop, by the New Netherland colony. This particular fort was situated at the convergence of the Connecticut and Park Rivers. It was established in the year 1623 but the fur traders ended up abandoning their post by the year 1654. These days, the region close to the location is still known as Dutch Point.
