There was never a conventional downtown area in Lakewood. Initially, the region with the most commercial establishment was West Colfax Avenue from Harlan west to Kipling and beyond. Furthermore, the JCRS or also referred to as the Jewish Consumptive Relief Society for TB patients, along with the small frame Methodist Church was some of the first major establishments within the region. The city supports numerous strip malls to which are home to numerous multi-business establishments. Numerous bigger complexes have been build more recently at Westland and JCRS. The Villa Italia Mall on Alameda Boulevard, located 20 blocks south of Colfax, reflected the southward expansion of the Lakewood settlement. It was home to a bigger region of retail property.
