Lakewood, Colorado is the most heavily populated city in Jefferson County. It is considered Colorado's 5th most heavily populated city. The U.S. Census Bureau projected the population Lakewood to be approximately 142,980 as of April 1, 2010. The city of Lakewood is part of the Denver-Aurora-Broomfield, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area and is located west of the city of Denver.

Prior to its incorporation in 1969, the city of Lakewood was policed by the Jefferson County Sherriff. They had few street lights and sidewalks then and were looked after by a volunteer fire service. In the year 1969, the City of Lakewood became incorporated. The population of the city was already over 90,000 at the time of incorporation.

The largest employers in Lakewood are government, though the economy within Lakewood is diverse. A medical devices manufacturer referred to as CaridianBCT employs over 1600 people and the Jefferson County R-1 school district employs approximately 3930 individuals.

There was never a conventional downtown area in Lakewood. Initially, the region with the most commercial establishment was West Colfax Avenue from Harlan west to Kipling and beyond. Furthermore, the JCRS or also referred to as the Jewish Consumptive Relief Society for TB patients, along with the small frame Methodist Church was some of the first major establishments within the region. By the 1950s, gas stations, drug stores, grocery stores, taverns and restaurants, a bowling alley, a movie theatre, several motels and used car lots emerged.

The city supports numerous strip malls to which are home to numerous multi-business establishments. Numerous bigger complexes have been build more recently at Westland and JCRS. The Villa Italia Mall on Alameda Boulevard, located 20 blocks south of Colfax, reflected the southward expansion of the Lakewood settlement. It was home to a bigger region of retail property. As soon as the mall went into decline, the Lakewood City Council devised a plan to take down the Villa Italia Mall and replace it with a new development called Belmar.

There is an International Baccalaureate school located in Jefferson County's Lakewood High School and an I.B. School also at the Alameda High School. There is the Colorado Christian University situated in Lakewood also.
