Hinton is a town within west-central Alberta, Canada. It is situated in Yellowhead County, 50 mi or 81 kilometres northeast of Jasper and roughly 176 mi or 284 kilometres west of Edmonton, Alberta's capital city, at the crossroads of Yellowhead and Bighorn Highway, within the Athabasca River Valley. The community is located on the eastern slopes of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. The location of Hinton provides great opportunities for year-round outdoor adventure and exploration.

The Town of Hinton was named for William D. Hinton, General Manager and Vice President of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway. The community was recognized officially in 1928.

The Town of Hinton has changed its exact site thirteen times in its short history, with the various locations being scattered along a line around 12 kilometres in length. The original site was along Hardisty Creek, where an aboriginal group from the Jasper area had left members suffering from smallpox whilst the rest of the group traveled to Lac Ste. Anne to find medical help for the smallpox epidemic that was ravaging the indigenous population in Alberta. The region was therefore referred to as Cache Picote (Smallpox Camp) in the year 1870.

The town has been referred to as the "gateway to the Northern Rockies." The site amongst the foothills provides the many inhabitants with a fantastic quality of life. Different outdoor recreation opportunities exist within close proximity of the town, while we likewise provide excellent culture and recreation experiences and facilities.

The town of Hinton is a diverse community which builds and works together. With a population of just under 10,000 inhabitants, the town of Hinton supports the diversification of its economic base and will assist the development and growth of emerging tourism, residential attraction, and servicing and resource supple businesses. Hence, the Town of Hinton has developed Innovista Eco-Industrial Park - a leading-edge, highly desirable place to do and locate business. This particular park offers great opportunities for both employees and businesses.

Various community events and services, such as Hinton's Transit System and the annual Fohn Festival, make Hinton inhabitants proud of their region. Attractions, like Mountain Bike Park and Beaver Boardwalk, have been made possible by community volunteers who endeavour to work together to improve Hinton's quality of life.

The Youth Centre within the town of Hinton has been part of the community ever since 2003, and is run in partnership along with the Town of Hinton and the Hinton Friendship Centre. The centre has numerous amenities for youth, including: televisions, computers, Wii/Xbox gaming systems with pool, games, air hockey, Dance Dance Revolution Arcade and a lot more.
