Montgomery, Alabama is located within the south-central part of the state on the Gulf Coastal Plain along the Alabama River. The city has an estimated population of roughly 205,000 and serves as the capital city of Alabama and the county seat of Montgomery County. The city of Montgomery is the second-largest city within the state (the city of Birmingham is the biggest). In the year 1819, two towns along the Alabama River merged to become the city of Montgomery. Around 30 years later, Montgomery became the capital state.
