Airdrie city Alberta is located just north of Calgary. It is part of Calgary's Census Metropolitan Area and is situated in the Calgary-Edmonton Corridor. The area has grown greatly over the past few years due to its nearness to Metro Calgary. Airdrie city is a member of the Calgary Regional Partnership and its boundaries are entirely in the rural Rocky View County.
Inhabitants of the city of Airdrie was 28,927 based on the 2006 Canadian Census. The population had grown to 39,822 according to the municipal census of 2010. Recently, there has been annexation of the land south of Airdrie. This together with the growth of Calgary's city limits during July 2007, have made the boundaries of the two cities within just a few kilometers of one another.
Airdrie city is located on the Queen Elizabeth II Highway. This roadway connects Calgary and Edmonton, making it a small transportation center. The Airdrie Airport does not offer regular scheduled flights even if it does serve the area. Calgary International Airport is the nearest major airport.
The town of Airdrie was initially established during the year 1889, through the construction of the railway from Calgary to Edmonton. The town got its name after the Scottish town of Airdrie. At present, Airdrie city has a lovely family community and is an industrial center. Nose Creek is the major body of water and is the focal point for different city parks and green spaces like Nose Creek Park. The park hosts the well-known Airdrie Festival of Lights throughout the Christmas season. The Airdrie Pro Rodeo and the Canada Day Parade are among various common gatherings. The Bert Church Live Theatre and the Nose Creek Valley Museum are among the city's major cultural locations.
Within the city of Airdrie, there are several sporting franchises. The senior men's lacrosse team is referred to as the Knights of Airdrie and they compete in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League. Team Airdrie is a Junior C level hockey team which competes in the Calgary Jr. C Hockey League. Whereas the Airdrie Thunder is a Jr. B level hockey team who competes in the Heritage Junior B Hockey League.
