Estevan is the 8th largest city in Saskatchewan with a population of about 10,100 inhabitants, based on the 2006 numbers. It is situated near the southeastern corner of the province of Saskatchewan. The Souris River runs by the city. The city of Estevan is surrounded by the Rural Municipality of Estevan No. 5.

Arriving within the area around the city of Estevan during 1892, the original settlers came as the Canadian Pacific Railway expanded its rail lines. Estevan was officially incorporated as a village during 1899, then a town during 1906. On the 1st of March, the year 1957, Estevan obtained the status of a city, that, in Saskatchewan terms, is any community of at least 5,000.

The origin of the name is attributed to George Stephen's Registered Telegraphic Address, Estevan. George Stephen was the very first President of the Canadian Pacific Railway from 1881 to 1888.

Estevan was the location of the infamous Estevan Riot in the year 1913. Even if most of the strikers were from nearby Bienfait, the strike is associated with Estevan because it was in this particular city that the demonstrators were met by members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. After the subsequent riot, that lasted 45 minutes, three strikers lay dead. It was later proven that the three miners had been killed by the RCMP. The miners had been organized by the Workers' Unity League.

The main newspaper in the city of Estevan, the Estevan Mercury, has been around ever since 1903 and now distributes to its 3,600 paid readers. The newspaper also provides up-to-date news via online editorial copy and local videos at estevanmercury.ca. It also has as free distribution newspaper circulated throughout the southeast region of Saskatchewan to over 9,000 homes; the Southeast Trader Express.

Pipeline News, Saskatchewan Petroleum Monthly newspaper is likewise based out of the city of Estevan. Southeast Saskatchewan has a significant amount of oil production, and the Pipeline News' main office is situated locally to report on these matters. Springtime is a short transitional season, with a mean temperature of 11.3 C or 52.3 F and 160.6 mm or 6.32 inches of precipitation, with significant snowfall during April.
