The capital city of Utah State, the city of Salt Lake or SLC serves a population of just over 185,000, making it the most heavily populated city in the state. It is part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area, population 1,124,197. The larger urban region wherein Salt Lake is located is called the Wasatch Front, that has a population of over 2 million. The Wasatch Front and the city of Reno, in the state of Nevada, are the two largest urban areas in the Great Basin.

Brigham Young, Mormon leader together with his followers established the village in 1847. The Mormon settlers changed a dry valley with irrigation and cultivation. Until the year 1868 the city of Salt Lake was named "Great Salt Lake City" after Great Salt Lake nearby.
