The city of Abilene, Texas is a city located next to the geographic center of the state. The city serves as the county seat for Taylor County and is considered to be "the Future Great City of West Texas". Taylor County currently has a population of just over 120,000; 115,930 of these inhabitants reside inside the Abilene city limits. It is conveniently located adjacent to Interstate 20. Abilene was established during the month of March, 1881 when the Texas and Pacific Railroad was finally finished.

Even if Abilene is not fairly as big as some other cities situated in Texas, it still provides plenty of dining, lodging, cultural, and shopping opportunities. The city is quickly becoming recognized as a regional center for commerce, distribution, industry, transportation and education.

Over the years, the city of Abilene has transformed from being a cattle-shipping prairie town to a bustling city with a flourishing economy based on military, oil and agriculture. The breadth of economic diversity that the city of Abilene provides attracts many determined people. Abilene solicits new businesses by offering a lot of opportunities and tax incentives.

Abilene was the very first city within the state of Texas to combat the 1980s oil bust by creating a half-cent sales tax to help finance economic development during the year 1986.

Abilene boasts many attractions, such as: the Mesquite Hill Motocross, Abilene Skate Park, Abilene Speedway, the Ball Ranch and the Abilene Dragstrip. The city of Abilene also offers some unique attractions, such as the National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature, the Grace Museum, 12 Armored Division Memorial Museum, the Center for Contemporary Arts, Paramount Theatre, Prime Time Family Entertainment center, Abilene Ballet Theatre, Cockerell Galleria and Studios, Abilene Community Theatre, Abilene Community Bank, Abilene Opera Association, Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra, the Amy Graves Ryan Little Theatre and the Chorus Abilene.

Some of the other attractions within Abilene are the Abilene Zoo, the Dyess Visitor Center Memorial Park, the Abilene State Park and the Buffalo Gap Historic Village. In the city there are more than 25 parks which take up a total of approximately 1,246 acres.

The Abilene Zoo is home to a vast variety of animals. There are several hundred animals located within the facility. During the year, the Zoo provides some educational courses and summer programs. They even have some special events that take place every so often. A few of the newer attractions consist of a Black Rhino exhibit, a Southern American Maned Wolf Exhibit, and a cougar exhibit. The Elm Creek backyard area would house some animals like otters, armadillos and skunks that have been found locally.
