North Charleston, South Carolina serves a growing population of approximately 97,000 residents. It was not incorporated as a city until the year 1972. Today it is the third largest city within the state of South Carolina, and is considered a major industrial and retail center. North Charleston incorporates parts of Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties. The city's total land area is 198 km2.
North Charleston has numerous historical sites, museums and other attractions. The American LaFrance Fire Museum & Educational Center features antique and one-of-a-kind fire equipment and vehicles dating back to the mid 18th century. The Museum is situated between Tanger outlet mall and the North Charleston Coliseum.
On display at the H.L. Hunley Museum is a Civil War era submarine, that is recognized as the worlds very first successful combat submarine. Lifted from the ocean floor during 2000, the submarine is being restored together with numerous artifacts which were recovered at the site. The museum is located at the old Naval Base within North Charleston.
The Greater Charleston Naval Memorial features sculptures of different types of ships made and serviced at the Charleston Naval Shipyard. The Memorial is located on the old Navy Yard at Riverfront Park.
The Charleston Area Convention Center has brought millions of visitors and guests to the city ever since its establishment in the year 1999. The facility has ballrooms, meeting rooms and exhibition halls. The Convention Center contributes significantly to the local and regional economy.
The North Charleston Coliseum is a 13,295-seat place which is utilized for local graduations, concerts and special events. It is among the largest venues within South Carolina and home to the South Carolina Stingrays hockey team of the ECHL. The Coliseum is conveniently located near the Charleston International Airport.
Major Broadway shows, and world-renowned theatrical and musical performances play at The North Charleston Performing Arts Center, which seats over 2,000.
Together, the Charleston Area Convention Center, the North Charleston Coliseum and the Performing Arts Center form an entertainment and cultural complex which benefits the entire region. These facilities are owned by the city of North Charleston.
