Richmond is a lovely coastal city situated within the province of British Columbia. It is considered a part of Metro Vancouver and its nearest communities are Burnaby and Vancouver to the north, New Westminster to the east and Delta to the south. The Strait of Georgia forms the western border of Richmond.

The Vancouver International Airport if located within the city limits of Richmond and is found on Sea Island. The city is made up of the islands within the delta of the Fraser River. The largest and most populous of these islands is Lulu Island. The 2nd largest island is Sea Island, home to the Vancouver International Airport. Furthermore, there are 13 smaller islands that make up Richmond's 129.66 square kilometers of land area. Steveston's quaint fishing village is also included in Richmond city and it is located in Richmond's far southwest corner. The Richmond Olympic Oval was made nearby and was among the location for speed-skating events in the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

Because the land area of Richmond occupies islands in a river delta, the soil is rich and alluvial making it perfect for agriculture. As a matter of fact, the area was one of the first sites within British Columbia to be farmed in 19th century by individuals from Europe.

Richmond's geographical location likewise causes numerous concerns. As the land is just above sea level, the area is prone to flooding, especially during times of high tide. All of the main islands are now bordered by a system of dykes, in order to deal with this situation. These dykes serve to protect the city from anticipated flooding, although, they are not as huge as those found in the Netherlands or the New Orleans levees. If there ever is a big earthquake within the area, there is a chance that the dykes could break. This will cause the alluvial soil to possibly liquefy which will result in extensive damage.

Richmond city is likewise at risk of experiencing a major flood if the Fraser River has an unusually high spring freshet. There are different recreation trails and bird sanctuaries that run along the tops of many of the dykes. These wide, flat dirt roads make perfect locations for joggers, families to walk with strollers and young children as well as the ideal place for individuals who walk their dogs. The city of Richmond supports approximately 1400 acres of parkland.

The city and surrounding area supports 100,000 jobs in different fields including retail, tourism, airport services and aviation, fishing, light manufacturing, government and agriculture. The region is even a leading place for high-technology firms. These businesses consist of MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates and the Nintendo Corporation of Canada.
