The city of Powell River is located in the southwestern region of BC, but sits on the northern part of the Sunshine Coast. The city of River Powell is the seat of the Powell River Regional District. Most of the cities population resides on Malaspina Strait's eastern shores, that could be located between the Mainland and Texada Island. Even with the nearness to Vancouver and a few other densely inhabited cities, the community remains extremely isolated because of it's geographical surroundings. The black bears which inhabit the area normally avoid the city of Powell River, choosing to stay on the backwoods logging roads. Osprey, eagles, otters, and pine marten do not have the same preference and are usually found approaching the Sliammon Creek seashore. The Sliammon Fish Hatchery, situated roughly 3 miles north of the Powell River bridge, offers a superb view of both predator and prey.
