The tiny city of Port Moody is located within Metro Vancouver. The city is crescent-shaped and is situated at the east end of the Burrard Inlet and is one part of the Tri-Cities area. Of the Tri-Cities, Port Moody is the smallest; Burnaby is on the west and is bordered by Coquitlam on the south and the east. The rocky Coast Mountains along with the villages of Belcarra and Anmore are situated to the northwest and north. Port Moody was named after Richard Moody.
The 2006 Census showed that the City of Port Moody had 27,512 living in 10,125 private dwellings. There was a 15% increase in population growth from the last Census recorded during the year 2001. There has been major housing construction that could account for a portion of this population boom. In the area, there are 8,015 residential dwellings which are owned and 2,115 which are leased. The city of Port Moody has the fourth highest municipal median family income coming in at $70,239. The biggest businesses within Port Moody are Eagle Ridge Hospital and School District 43.
The City of Port Moody has a Stream Stewardship Program in place, since there are more than forty one streams which flow through Burrard Inlet from Port Moody. This particular program manages the streamside vegetation, the urban streams and the watersheds to support the production of fish and insect life for future and present generations. The PMES is the Port Moody Ecological Society. They are a not-for-profit group which works with the city in order to support ecological awareness in the area. The Port Moody Ecological Society volunteers operate a trout and salmon hatchery; provide public awareness and community outreach programs, as well as operate a water quality lab.
Since 1988, City Hall in Port Moody has proudly been pesticide free after banning pesticide use altogether. The city of Port Moody provides seminars each year at its Inlet Theatre to teach people how to garden naturally.
The city has been given various international, provincial and national awards. During 2004, the city of Port Moody was honored with a prestigious award from the UN sponsored International Award for "Liveable Communities" in the category of "Planning for the Future." For cities of the same size category, Port Moody respectively won third place overall.
The city of Port Moody was highlighted by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business during the year 2008 for being the most fiscally responsible amongst B.C's 28 biggest cities.
