The city of Port Alberni is located within the Alberni Valley, which sits at the head of the Alberni Inlet on Vancouver Island. This inlet is the biggest inlet on the Island. Sadly, the salmon population has lessened significantly over the past couple of years. The Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District runs it's headquarters from the city. The total population of the city is projected to be 17,743.

The forest industry is currently the most essential source of employment for the city of Port Alberni. Douglas Fir, Hemlocks, Western Red Cedars and Yellow Cedars all thrive in the rich forests surrounding the city of Port Alberni. Most of the present logging comes from second growth forests since the majority of the old growth forests have already been logged. On the edge of the Alberni Inlet is the Alberni Pacific Division, a lumber mill and Catalyst Paper, a prospering paper mill. A few other small sawmills are scattered all over the valley. Alberni Valley likewise has red clay soils that are perfect for farming.

Even though forestry is still practiced, it has just undergone a considerable downturn because of the forest business refusing to sell the trees to local mills. This has created a major economic recession within the city of Port Alberni that is presently being combated with an attempt to shift the economy towards tourism. Because of the recession the population has started to lessen.

Travelers on their way to the West Coast of Vancouver Island, they would usually stop within Port Alberni. They would stop within the city of Port Alberni so as to shop prior to continuing on to their final destination locations like for instance Pacific Rim National Park, Ucluelet and Tofino, where the average price of commodities skyrockets. Some big strip malls, retailers and grocery stores have developed along the Johnston Road corridor to take full advantage of the increased traffic. Because of its perfect location on the fringe of wilderness but within proximity to Victoria and Vancouver, several eco-tourism companies have decided to establish their shops in the Alberni Valley.

The sockeye salmon returns of Port Alberni over the last two years have topped 1.4 million. The two biggest spawning pools, the Great Central and Sproat, saw over 800,000 Sockeye return. Anglers can enjoy fantastic salmon fishing, like for example Coho and Chinook, starting from early part of June through September in the saltchuck. The river and lake systems provide year round fishing. It is thought that the improved high seas conditions are the reason for the record returns. This can also be partly due to removal of the last pulp mill 20 years ago. A couple of new hatchery's, the Robertson Creek Hatchery and the Coho hatchery located in the Mclean Hill National Historic Site, have recently been established by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and a team of salmon enhancement volunteers. In the year 2010, the city of Port Alberni was voted as the "Ultimate Fishing Town" by the World Fishing Network.
