Named after the first postmaster, Nelson Parks, Parksville City was incorporated in the month of June the year 1945. It became a town on the year 1978 and a city in the year 1981. The city is located on Vancouver Island's eastern shores, which is just approximately 37 kilometers north of BC Ferry and Nanaimo Terminals to the mainland. The first settler within the area was John Hirst. It became an outpost until the turn of the century, and during 1901, Parksville City grew exponentially due to the Esquimalt and Nanaimo extension. Because of the increase in tourism, many motels, stores, resorts and campgrounds followed, which continues to give the city an economic boost up to now.

There are many places to visit for outdoor and indoor activities. The Oceanside Place, which opened during 2003, is under the jurisdiction of the Regional District of Nanaimo. Some of the numerous attractions it offers are two NHL regulation size ice sheets which were named after the two local legends and heroes in the region: These comprise: Howie Meeker, Hockey Hall of Famer and World Champion Figure Skater, Victor Kraatz. Furthermore, there is also a meeting room, Oceanside Pond, multi-purpose rooms, a concession, a skate shop and also the Parks Department and RDN Recreation offices. Wembley Mall, located between Parksville and Qualicum Beach, is the most recent ice facility within Vancouver Island that provides three ice sheets. It is one of the most popular facilities for Oceanside visitors and residents. The Parksville Curling Club is for curling enthusiasts who want to have some fun and enjoy the sport. There are five sheets of "arena ice" that are always kept in good condition by their Ice Technician. The rink is available for rent by businesses and groups, and it is available for use night or day. The Parksville Lawn Bowling Club was created during 1991 and is situated within downtown Parksville behind the Parksville Community and Conference Centre, on East Stanford. On an annual basis, there is an open house that invites the public to see lawn bowling events and some tournaments. The Regional District of Nanaimo offers the recreational programs within the area, and it encompasses the boundaries of Town of Qualicum, Parksville City and Nanaimo City. The Recreation and Parks Department offers services which comprise the Ravensong Aquatic Centre and Oceanside Place. It also offers the residents of Gabriola Island.

The economy of Parksville City is heavily dependent upon tourism. The area is considered amongst the fastest growing regions on the island. The central island location and moderate weather condition has made it a hot-spot for vacation. Two of its most well-known attractions are the Rathtrevor Beach and Parksville Beach. Its other main industries are tourism, retail, construction, light and service industries.
