Summerside is a Canadian city with a present population of 14,500 people in Prince County, Prince Edward Island. It is the 2nd biggest city in the province and the principal municipality for the western part of the island.
The town of Summerside was officially incorporated on the first of April, the year 1877, and after that reincorporated on the first of April, the year 1995 as a city.

After purchasing Charlottetown Light & Power during 1918, Maritime Electric consolidated electric distribution on the island. The company offered to take over the operations in the city of Summerside, but backed down after residents rejected several offers. The Summerside distribution grid has been linked to the Maritime Electric network ever since 1961.
Usually the majority of its electricity is bought from the nearby provincial electric utility, NB Power. During the year 2008, 76.5% of its power was obtained from NB Power. Though the Summerside Electric Commission has its own diesel turbine at the Harvard Street Generating Station which can operate for many days independently of NB Power's supply, it is only utilized in exceptional circumstances like for instance power disruptions with New Brunswick or parts of the Maritime Electric power system that feed the city.
