Situated within Toronto City is the suburb of York. The municipality was once independent before the 1998 amalgamation of five other communities along with the city of Toronto. Currently, there are around 150,000 individuals living in York. The previous York City had consisted of various villages, some of which today form distinct neighbourhoods in York, such as Lambton Mills and Weston. York is located northeast of North York, southwest of North York, and east of Etobicoke, where it is bordered by the Humber River.

The York Township was established officially during 1850, by Canada West. This town was located east of the Humber River. The existing location of Victoria Park Avenue lies toward the west, and Steeles Avenue to the north. The Town of York was bounded by the townships of Scarborough, Etobicoke, Markham and Vaughan. Today, York is a dissolved municipality.

The suburb is an ethnically diverse region with more than 50 percent of the inhabitants being born in a different nation. The Portuguese community is one of the areas largest ethnic groups, with numerous Portuguese companies found on Dufferin Street, St. Clair West, Rogers Road and Caledonia Road. Numerous Portuguese and Latin Americans live along St. Clair. A once big Italian population is still visible within the several Italian businesses along St. Clair West, called Corso Italia, and site of the yearly Corso Italia festival. The Italian population lessened with the movement of Italians to suburbs like for example Woodbridge. The Eastern European and Jewish populations reside mainly in the east end of York.

Several years ago, crime was becoming a problem within the York-Weston area. Even though only 4.5% of Toronto's people resides there, about 30 percent of Toronto's homicides happened there. There has been significant improvement since then since homicides have lessened. The local news is covered by the York Guardian. The Metroland Media Group publishes it, which is owned by Torstar Corporation, the publisher of the Toronto Star.
