Thorold is a city on the Niagara Peninsula in the province of Ontario, Canada. The city of Thorold gets its distinct character from the fact that the Welland Canal passes through its center. The canal's Twin Flight Locks are a main tourist attraction within the area. Thorold has a population of about 18,200 and serves as the seat of the Regional Municipality of Niagara.
The city of Thorold encompasses the communities of Rolling meadows, St. Johns, Allanburg, Beaverdams, Turner's Corner, Confederation Heights, Port Robinson and Thorold South.
In 1792, the area of St. John's was first settled, in the early history of the migration of Europeans to the Niagara Peninsula. The very first business operations within the area was a sawmill on St. Johns Creek, which is a tributary of Twelve Mile Creek.
At the place of the sawmill offered many benefits of hydro power, which could have been turned into a commodity. There was only one other sawmill within the area during that time. By 1804, a first free school was established in a single-room, wooden schoolhouse - the very first free school in Upper Canada. By the year 1831, there were a number of more mills, a post office, woollen factory, tannery, foundry, and different trades.
