The municipality of Scarborough is a recently dissolved municipality presently operating within the city of Toronto. It represents much of the eastern part of Toronto. Scarborough shares its borders together with the City of Pickering and the Rouge River on the east, Steeles Avenue East on the north, Lake Ontario towards the south, and by Victoria Park Avenue on the west. Scarborough has grown into a diverse urban community and was initially a collection of rural villages. It grew from a township into a city over a period of 200 years.

During the year 1954, it changed regions to Metropolitan Toronto and in 1998 it eventually merged into the City of Toronto. This location was named after the English town of Scarborough, that is situated within North Yorkshire. In 1796, Elizabeth Simcoe came up with the name. She was inspired by the Scarborough Bluffs that reminded her of the white cliffs near her house.

The Scarborough area retains a lot of its own character and flavor even though it has characteristics of a suburb of Old Toronto. There are several particular neighborhoods within Scarborough which have become popular destinations for immigrants who are new to Canada. Scarborough has become amongst the most diverse and multicultural areas in the Greater Toronto region as a result. It has become home to various places of worship and numerous religious groups as well. Amongst Toronto's most popular natural landmarks are situated here like Rouge Park and the Scarborough Bluffs. Moreover, Scarborough has been declared to be greener compared to whatever other location within Toronto.

Scarborough is dominated by two watersheds, the Rouge River and Highland Creek. Highland Creek occupies roughly 70% of the total area in Scarborough. It takes up the western half of the community and the Rouge River flows through the eastern portion. Both of these rivers flow into Lake Ontario on Scarborough's shore. Both river deltas are constricted to narrow channels where they flow into the lake due to the site of the Lakeshore CN railway right-of-way.

Before, Scarborough was a borough of Toronto. Its economy is an integral part of the Toronto economy. Scarborough lacks the same level of business infrastructure development and urban density which is found within downtown Toronto. There are some farms which are still present in the northeast corner of Scarborough that are reflective of the region's rural history.

In lots of labour force categories, industry is similar to those of Toronto, while manufacturing is truly higher within Scarborough. Many of the technical services, scientific and professional industries rank far lower compared to those in Toronto. Several notable businesses have their headquarters within Scarborough like for instance Eli Lilly Canada Inc., Toyota Canada Inc., Royal Doulton, CTV Global Media, Thomson Carswell, Teva Canada, Cinram, President's Choice Financial, Honda Canada Inc., SKF, Aviva, TELUS, Alfa Laval and Yellow Pages Group. During the year 1993, a General Motors Canada Van Assembly plant that used to be located here was closed down.
