Port Colborne City is situated in the Niagara Region of Southern Ontario. Port Colborne City is situated on the shores of Lake Erie, at the southern end of one of the world's longest canal locks, the Welland Canal.

At first, the community settled during the early 1800's and was referred to as Gravelly Bay. Later on, the town changed its name to honor, Sir John Colborne, a British war hero and the former Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada. The new name marked the 1833 historic opening of the southern terminus of the First Welland Canal. Today, Port Colborne is a thriving city with a population of 18,599.

Vale, a nickel company, is among Port Colborne City's primary sources of employment, though factory automation and cutbacks in operations have reduced the labor force very much. Port Colborne has been a nickel mining town since the opening of a refinery in the year 1918. The town's proximity to Niagara Falls, with generating stations producing low-cost hydroelectricity, encouraged the development of nickel refining. During WWII, the city of Port Colborne produced electro-refined nickel for the war effort.

The city of Port Colborne celebrates the significant part which the Welland Canal played in the city's history in the annual Canal Days festival. The festival features tall ships, live entertainment, antique car show, kite festival and fireworks. The festival happens mostly along the canal, on West St. within sight of Clarence St. Bridge, one of few remaining lift bridges on the canal. Lock 8 has the distinction of being one of the longest canal locks within the globe, measuring 420 metres. The lock keeps the water level on the Welland Canal constant regardless of weather on Lake Erie.

The communities that make up Port Colborne are: Pleasant Beach, Pine Crest Point, Bethel, Cedar Bay, Nickel Beach, Echo Beach, Silver Bay, Sherkston, Shisler Point, Sherkston Beaches, Humberstone and Gasline.
