Orleans is a suburb in Ottawa City. Orleans is situated along the Ottawa River around 16 km east of downtown Ottawa. Orleans has a population of about 95,500. Prior to becoming a district of the City of Ottawa during the year 2001, the community of Orleans lay within the Cities of Cumberland and Gluocester.
There is a huge community of French-speaking inhabitants. Jeanne D'Arc Boulevard, among the main streets in Orleans, was named after Joan of Arc, the famous 15th-century woman who led the French army in the Siege of Orleans.
Historically, the area was mainly rural, until in the 1960s, the first major suburban subdivision was constructed within the region called Queenswood Heights. Orleans has grown steadily ever since then, with development pushing at its easternmost and southern boundaries.
Skating has a high profile in Orleans. It was the training center for Elizabeth Manley, winner of the 1988 Olympic Silver Medal in Women's figure skating. The skating rink in Orleans is named for her. Orleans is likewise home to the Gloucester Skating Club and the Canadian Academy of Skating Arts. The Ray Friel Recreational Complex is a large, full-service recreational center with an indoor wave pool, public library, fitness facilities, physiotherapy clinic, three skating arenas, a high school and two soccer fields.
Petrie Island is situated within the north-east of Orleans along the Ottawa River. Parkland is situated on several small river islands linked by a roadway known as Trim Road. These sandbar islands were used before for extracting sand. Petrie Island has lagoons, a nature centre and beaches. Tourists can known about the local environment and try to spot the turtles which live in the lagoons. A marina is located on the island and it has a kayak and canoe rentals.
The Orleans suburbs features lots of nature trails like for example the Princess Louise Trail and the Bilberry Creek Trail. Hikers can look at the Taylor Creek falls near St. Joseph Boulevard.
