The city of Orillia is situated in Southern Ontario in Simcoe County. It is around 135 kilometres north of Toronto, located between lakes Simcoe and Couchiching. Orillia's population is 40,532, which makes it a mid-sized Canadian city and the 72nd largest metropolitan area with regards to population.

Orillia's archaeological record dates back well more than 4,000 years. First Nations peoples, mainly the Iroquois and Huron, once fished, hunted and traded in the area. European settlement dates back nearly 200 years. During 1867, the city of Orillia was incorporated as a village. It became a town in 1875, and finally a city in 1969.

There is a mixture of different trades which bring economic activity to Orillia City. The sectors that have a major influence in the economy consist of tourism, manufacturing, government services and the service sector trades. Casino Rama, which is situated close to Orillia City on First Nation reserve land belonging to the Chippewas, is the areas largest company. Orillia's waterfront development, along with annual festivals and different cultural attractions, attract thousands of tourists on a yearly basis, earning Orillia the nickname, "Sunshine City."

Orillia City has many manufacturing operations consisting of CCI Thermal Technologies (heating components and industrial heaters), Dorr-Oliver Eimco (industrial machines), Kubota Metal Corporation (petrochemical industry components), Parker Hannifin (moulded rubber products), TI Group Automotive Systems (automotive parts), Pliant Corporation (parts for the packaging trade) and Smiths Aerospace Components (aerospace industry machining). Parker Hannifin and Otaco Seating closed down their operations within Orillia City in the year 2007 and 2009, respectively.

Call centre TeleTech Canada hires around 850 individuals. The founders of G.W.B. Rope & Twine, amongst the foremost North American producers of braided rope from 1973-1985, launched G&B Ropes within Orillia during the year 1990, that eventually evolved into Redpoint Ropes.

Among the largest public-sector employers in the city is the Ontario Provincial Police, that has its headquarters here in the city of Orillia. Historically, the biggest business was an asylum that later became an institution to house individuals who are disabled, called The Huronia Regional Centre.
