Mississauga is a Southern Ontario city in the western part of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), part of the Regional Municipality of Peel. Mississauga is a fast growing city, doubling its people each and every decade for the last couple of decades. It is Canada's sixth most heavily populated municipality (pop. 734,000) and the 3rd most heavily populated city on the Great Lakes. Between the year 1986 and the year 1991, Mississauga had the largest growth in population of whichever city in Canada. Population growth has slowed somewhat ever since then, even if a sustained growth in population continues. Inhabitants of the city of Mississauga are called Mississaugans.

Mississauga's growth is primarily due to its history as a Toronto suburb. Nonetheless, Mississauga City is no mere bedroom community. The municipality has extensive industrial and corporate development, providing an abundance of employment opportunities. Mississauga City has succeeded in creating a distinctive image for itself over the past decade. An international architectural design competition held in 2006 for two condominium towers, called Absolute World, created an iconic landmark for Mississauga City. The towers, which are near completion, are the tallest to be found within whatever Canadian suburban city.

Mississauga City is very accessible to major domestic markets along with markets in Northeastern and Midwestern United States. Toronto Pearson International Airport is situated there, and five major freeways pass through the city of Mississauga. Mississauga's large corporate/financial district has the Canadian headquarters of such major international Fortune 500 companies as General Electric, Fujitsu, Wal-Mart Canada, Hewlett-Packard, PepsiCo, Microsoft, Intuit Canada and Siemens. In reality, more than sixty of the Fortune 500 base their global or Canadian headquarters in this city.

The numerous industries that are supported in the city of Mississauga include finance and banking, pharmaceuticals, electronics and computers, transportation parts and equipment industries. In the financial sector, the major employers consist of Citibank Canada, and its two corporate IT development centres, and TD Bank Financial, with its three Corporate IT development centres. Retail is another strong sector. Mississauga boasts the second-biggest shopping mall of the Greater Toronto Area, Square One Shopping Centre. The city of Mississauga is currently without debt, even though it might have to borrow money for new capital projects during 2012.

The city has the headquarters of several airlines including Kam Air, Air Georgian and Air Canada Jazz, which operates a regional office in Mississauga.
