Kirkland Lake is a town and municipality located in Timiskaming District within Northeastern Ontario, Canada. The 2006 population, based on Statistics Canada, was 8,248.

The name of the community is derived from the name of the nearby lake. The lake was named after Winnifred Kirkland, who was a secretary of the Ontario Department of Mines. Louis Rorke named the lake in the year 1907. Miss Kirkland never visited the town and the lake which bore her name does not exist anymore due to mine tailings. The community consists of Swastika as well as Kirkland Lake, Chaput Hughes and Harvey Kirkland.

The town of Kirkland Lake is situated in the Precambrian Shield, a resource rich geological formation. The Arctic Watershed is likewise nearby. Waters flowing south of this height of land, 318 meters above sea level flow into the Saint Lawrence River and on to the Atlantic Ocean. North of this point, all waters flow into Hudson Bay and on to the Arctic Ocean.

Mount Cheminis is among the areas most popular landmarks, rising practically 500 meters above sea level. Various landmarks include various small kettle lakes, which were scraped out of the rock and filled with clear water in the last Ice Age.

Towards the end of the last century, the town went trough an economic decline, when the mines closed down. The township started to recover, after Foxpoint Resources, currently referred to as Kirkland Lake Gold Inc. or also known as KLG, bought mining claims within the region and started to do major exploration work. KLG successfully resuscitated the local mining scene, finding new zones of mineralization that, combined with the gradually increasing price of gold, turned the township around. Now, the township of Kirkland Lake is probably among the most successful communities of size in Northern Ontario.

During the year, the Kirkland Lake region supports a strong tourism trade. Lots of campers, anglers and hunters pass through during the summer seasons as they look for suitable outdoor recreation.
