The small city of Kenora within Northwestern Ontario is situated just off the Trans Canada highway close to the Provincial border of Manitoba and Ontario. The city sits east of Winnipeg by 200 kilometres. The city serves as the seat of the Kenora District.
The city of Kenora is located on the Lake of the Woods and was first called Rat Portage. During 2000, Kenora City was created when Keewatin and Jaffray Melick together with Kenora merged. The three pillars of Kenora City's economy are tourism, forestry and mining. The city's population practically doubles in size throughout the summer and spring since residents from Minnesota state and Manitoba visit so as to take advantage of the various beautiful lakes of the area. Many cottages are located around Lake of the Woods and various smaller lakes near Kenora. Tourists throughout the globe flock to this recreational paradise.
Within Kenora, the most famous summer activities comprise hiking, biking, fising, swimming, boating and guided tours. However, there are lots of fantastic activities and events to enjoy throughout the year. Winter visitors like ice fishing, snow boarding, snowmobiling, cross county skiing and down hill skiing.
There are two travel information centers in Kenora to help provide the starting point of further exploration of the area. There is a travel info center situated within the Harbourfront pavillion on Bernier Drive. The second information center is a brand new center open year round, The Discovery Center (931 Lake View Drive, just off Highway 17 West).
