Kent, Washington serves a population of around 120,000. Kent is the 3rd largest city in King County and is a suburb of Seattle. The population has just grown, but due primarily to annexation, not to an arrival of new inhabitants. Towns nearby consist of Auburn, Federal Way, unincorporated King County and part of Covington towards the south, Federal Way, Des Moines and Sea Tac to the west, Tukwila and Renton towards the north, and Covington towards the east. Mt. Rainier could be seen towards the southeast.
Kent consists of three areas: West Hill, East Hill and the Valley. The downtown core lies in the Valley. The city of Kent has a total area of 73.2 km2, of which 0.6 km2 is water and 72.6 km2 is land. The city of Kent has the 2nd biggest warehouse district within the country. The Green River runs north through the city of Kent on its way to Puget Sound. The East Hill area has a large lake called Lake Meridian.
Kent was initially known as Titusville after it was established by European-Americans inhabitants in the early eighteen sixties. There is still a visible "Titusville Station" sign that can be found on Gowe St. Hops were the focus of the economy within the town since much of its earnings came from the grain in the 1880s. Within Europe, an aphid infestation had destroyed hops crops, boosting the price of hops from the Puget Sound area where hops were shipped from Titusville by rail or river transportation. A local invasion of aphids eventually ended the production of hops in the valley. Titusville was given a different name, after the County of Kent within England. Kent was established as a city during 1890 with a population of 793.
The city of Kent is home to the headquarters of businesses like for example REI, Oberto Sausage Company and Seattle Bicycle Supply. There is a Boeing plant situated in the city of Kent. The fertile valley before is now covered with many warehouses due in part to the city's part as a center for transportation routes. The expansive warehouse district is used for regional distribution by companies like for instance General Electric Appliances and Whirlpool Corporation.
The city of Kent has developed the Kent Station and the ancillary shopping area after its most recent revitalization drive.
