The city of Kennewick, Washington is located in the southeastern part of the state within Benton County. Kennewick is the biggest of the Tri-Cities, with an approximate population of about 74,000. The city is located on Columbia River's southwestern bank, south of the convergence of the Yakima and Columbia rivers. Nearby is the Hanford nuclear site. The city is serviced by the Tri-Cities Airport in Pasco.
Kennewick was the site of the key significant archaeological discovery, known as the Kennewick Man. The Kennewick Man was the remains of a prehistoric man, unearthed in 1996, along the Columbia River banks. The Caucasoid features on the 9,000-year-old remains of what must have been an indigenous man have resulted in great speculation.
"Kennewick" is a name that is believed to be a native word that means "grassy place." The region's mild winter months have made it known as "winter paradise." Among the city's numerous previous names is "Tehe", from the sound of a native girl's laugh.
Kennewick was connected to other Columbia River settlements by steamboats and railroads in the 1880s. During 1888, the Northern Pacific Railroad constructed a permanent railroad bridge between Pasco and Kennewick, replacing the ferry as the preferred way of transportation for freight crossing the river. A cable ferry connected the west end of Kennewick and the Pasco side of the river up until 1931.
The Toyota Center hosts home games of the Indoor Football League's Tri-Cities Fever and the Tri-City Americans of the Western Hockey League. A unique local spectacle is the hydroplane race which takes place every summer on the Columbia River during the Water Follies. The Benton-Franklin County Fair is another yearly summer event. The city hosts two annual triathlons: Plutonium Man-Half-Iron Distance and Titanium Man-International Distance. The commercial district of the city attracts shoppers throughout southeastern Washington, particularly to the Columbia Center Mall.
