Plano is situated in the state of Texas, with most of the city lying with the limits of Collin County. During 2010, the population was projected to be approximately 259,841. Currently, it is the ninth-biggest city within Texas State, and the 71st most inhabited city in the country. Plano City is part of the metropolitan area called the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.

In Texas State, Plano City is perhaps the most highly educated city, consistently ranking among the highest within the nation. With only 6.4% poverty rate, the city of Plano was ranked by CNN Money the wealthiest state in the country. It has also be ranked as amongst the three "Top Suburbs to Live Well" of Dallas by Forbes.com, with University Park and Highland Park also making the list. Yearly, the city hosts the Plano Balloon Festival and the Plano International Festival, that are considered to be two of the most premiere entertainment and cultural events. It was even listed as the safest city to live in America by Forbes magazine during 2010.
