About 12 miles away from Dallas is Mesquite City, a medium sized city within north central Texas. It's named after the Mesquite Creek that flows beside the city. It is located near the intersection of Interstate Highways I-635 and I-30 on U.S. Route 80. Balch Springs lies to the south and the city of Garland is situated towards the north. Mesquite City is known as the "Rodeo Capital of Texas" since it hosts the Mesquite Championship Rodeo yearly.

During the year 1873, the Texas and Pacific Railway was established. Mesquite City was incorporated immediately after in the year 1887. Mesquite City started to expand bit by bit with cotton being its primary industry. Within a twenty year span, from 1950 to 1970, the population rapidly increased from less than 20,000 individuals to 50,000 residents. The cities expansion was due largely in part to the growth of the neighboring Dallas City. To be able to help preserve Mesquite's culture and heritage, the city established the Mesquite Historical Commission during the 1980's. The name has since been changed to the Historic Mesquite, Inc., and is now working on numerous projects like a historical park.

The town of Mesquite was founded on May 22, the year 1873, along the Texas & Pacific rail lines just outside of Dallas City, by an engineer of the Texas & Pacific Railway. The cities population began to grow more rapidly after the train, that ran from Dallas to Shreveport, started to stop within the little town. On December 3, the year 1887, Mesquite City was officially incorporated.

The economy in Mesquite mostly revolved around agriculture and farming, particularly growing hay, cotton, sugar and corn. The railway was invaluable for delivering these raw goods. The economy of Mesquite City remained concentrated on agriculture until soon after the second World War. The city of Mesquite prospered, and its population rose from 1,696 in the year 1950 to approximately 55,131 in 1970.

There are several unique attractions situated in the city. The most highly anticipated event of the year is the Mesquite Championship Rodeo, which has taken place each year since the year 1958 and is televised throughout the nation. Mesquite Art Centre is another of Mesquite's premier attractions that is home to over 16 arts groups including the Mesquite Symphony Orchestra, the Mesquite Community Theatre, the Mesquite Community Band, and a local art gallery. A family-friendly facility, the Rodeo City Music Hall, provides all types of entertainment intended for all ages. Between the months of March and November the Devil's Bowl Speedway hosts a variety of action-packed competitions which racing enthusiasts flock to attend. Among the historic locations within Mesquite City are the the Texas Queen and the Florence Ranch Homestead, which dates back to the late 1800's. The Texas Queen is a double deck paddle wheeler that serves as a well-known place utilized for special events.

There are different other population attractions situated nearby in Forth Worth and Dallas, comprising the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, Fair Park, Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas Zoo, Forth Worth Stockyards National Historic Districts, Dallas World Aquarium and Rainforest, Six Flags Over Texas, The Sixth Floor Museum, and the West End Marketplace.

There are a lot of nearby major sports teams, with the Major League Baseball's Texas Rangers playing their homegames in Arlington, whilst within Irving, the Dallas Cowboys, the Dallas Mavericks, and the Dallas Stars make their home.
