Carrollton City is part of three Texas counties, Collin, Denton and Dallas. This is due to its central location. It sits about 18 miles north of the city of Dallas on the Interstate Highway I-35 and is surrounded by the Texas communities; Coppell is to the west, Addison is to the east while Farmer's branch is due south of the city. Carrollton is technically a suburb of Dallas and as such is considered a part of the Forth Worth-Dallas metropolitan area. The Texas State Highways 190 and 121 also service the city of Carrollton.
It is thought that the city was named after Carrollton, Illinois, the birthplace of some of it's earliest settlers. It was originally settled in the year 1840 and was incorporated by 1913. In the beginning it was exclusively an agricultural community, but when the railway lines ran through the city in the year 1888 it became a shipping hub for livestock, grain, cotton, cottonseed, and gravel. the city of Carrollton grew significantly at the end of WWII World War II and was later enhanced by the surplus of people arriving from North Dallas.
The city of Carrollton draws a wide variety of different businesses because of it's business cost advantages and central location. Over five thousand companies are located within Carrollton City with most of them being involved with construction, wholesale and manufacturing trades, finance, insurance, or real estate.
Carrollton City has one of the highest park land per capita in the area with more than 1,230 acres of developed park land. For its people, the city of Carrollton provides several amenities, consisting of two swimming facilities, two recreation centers, a senior center, homestead museum, an amphitheater and a tennis center. There are several playing fields, playgrounds, hiking and biking trails, and picnic areas littered all through the city. The city of Carrollton boasts two of the top municipal golf courses within the state.
The economy is kept fairly stable due to its large and diversified economic base. Over 71,000 people are now employed in the labor force. Carrollton is home to various small business enterprises, that creates an entrepreneurial community.
Several world class art galleries and museums are situated within Carrollton. Furthermore, there are some opera, theater, ballet and symphony groups that operate in Carrollton City. Sixty acres are devoted completely to the Dallas Arts District, making it the largest downtown arts district within the United States.

There are some unique boutiques within Carrollton City that sell an eclectic assortment of gifts. Furthermore, there are more than 25 major shopping malls and 30 antique districts located in Carrollton City. There are also some malls nearby, like The Shops at Willow Bend, the Stonebriar Mall and the Dallas Galleria. As well, the 1.9 million square foot Grapevine Mills Outlet mall is situated close by.
