Odessa City, Texas sits mainly in Ector County, while a smaller part of the city stretches into Midland County. The city is the principle city within the Odessa Texas Metropolitan Statistical Area, with a population of around 99,900. The MSA is also part of the Midland-Odessa Texas Combined Statistical Area. In the year 1881, Odessa was established as a cattle shipping and water stop point on the Texas and Pacific Railway. The very first post office was opened soon after during 1885. During 1891 the city of Odessa was named the county seat of Ector County. The city was finally incorporated after the discovery of oil within the region during the year 1927.

The oil business helped to draw several migrant workers to Odessa City. Cowden Field and Penn Field were both opened during 1930. After opening, the population of the city of Odessa rose from 750 to over 5000. The second world war, and the rise in demand for oil which it created, expanded the cities population to a little more than 10,000.
