The city of San Angelo, Texas is located in West Central Texas within Tom Green County. The city serves as the county seat and supports a population of just about 92,000, with a bigger metro population of almost 109,000. Situated in the city are numerous unique landmarks, like the famous Fort Concho, Goodfellow Air Force Base and Angelo State University. San Angelo has numerous nicknames including The Concho City, The River City, The Pearl of the Conchos, and The Oasis of West Texas.
The region was first settled in the year 1867 as Fort Concho. It served as among the new forts which were meant to prevent hostile threats from the wild frontier. Troops which were stationed at the fort consisted of infantry, cavalry, as well as the Black Cavalry. Bartholomew J. DeWitt founded Santa Angela, a tiny village located outside the fort by the North and South Concho rivers. The community was named after Carolina Angela, his wife, but was ultimately changed to San Angela. In the year 1883, the US Postal Service insisted that the name be changed to San Angelo as San Angela was grammatically incorrect. The region is known in history as a brutal, rude, and somewhat unruly town with numerous gambling houses, brothels and saloons.
Currently, San Angelo has been targeted as being a terrific city to establish a small company. One of the city's strongest industries for employment is now telecommunications. The world's biggest call center is located here and is operated by the company Sitel. DCS, Blue Cross and Verizon are also key employers, each employing more than one thousand locals. West Central Texas also depends on the city of San Angelo as the regional medical center. Over three thousand people are employed by Community Medical Center and Shannon Medical Center, which offers services all around West Central Texas.
Ever since the 1990's, several big corporations still remain, although the manufacturing business has suffered a major decrease in profits. These include Conner Steel, Ethicon, a division of Johnson & Johnson, and Hirschfield Steel & Martifer, which is a Portuguese conglomerate and wind-turbine tower manufacturing plant.
Agriculture remains among the city's biggest and strongest industries. The San Angelo's Producer's Livestock Auction is among the country's biggest lamb and sheep auctions. Though most agriculture labor is done outside of the city of San Angelo, several thousands of individuals are employed by in processing plants and agriculture supporting roles. The Angelo State University Management Instruction and Research Center and the Texas A&M Texas Agrilife Research and Extension Center at San Angelo are agricultural research centers situated within the city.
The Goodfellow Air Force Base is the areas largest employer. Other important institutional employers within San Angelo include Angelo State University and the Shannon Medical Center.
