The city of Killeen is situated within Bell County and currently has a population of about 140,021. Over the past ten years Killeen City has gone through significant growth. In 2000, the population was just 86,911. By the year 2009, it was 119,510 and in the year 2010 the population had increased to 127,921. Killeen is one of the principle cities of the Killeen-Temple-Fort Hood Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The area that the city of Killeen now occupies was originally a small farming community called Palo Alto, that had existed ever since the year 1872. In the year 1881, the Gulf, Santa Fe and Colorado Railway bought out 360 acres of land, including the land where Palo Alto was situated. They created a 70-block town on the land. The town was named after Frank P. Killeen, the assistant General Manager of Railroad. Killeen City flourished, and by the next year a railroad depot, saloon, several stores, and a school had been developed. Some people from nearby communities relocated to the city of Killeen and by 1884 the population had increased to approximately 350 individuals. By this time, the city of Killeen had two gristmills, five general stores, two saloons, two cotton gins, a hotel, a lumberyard and a blacksmith shop.

Fort Hood is situated just beside the city of Killeen. As a result, the economy in Killeen is heavily dependent on the soldiers stationed at the Fort. Fort Hood is the area's largest source of job. Various fields of employment in Killeen City are educational services, government, healthcare, construction, food and accommodation services, and finance and insurance. Approximately 25 percent of the workforce works in sales and occupations. About 24 percent is employed in service work, and about 21% is involved in professional, management and related occupations.

Among the most common jobs are teachers, registered nurses, training and development specialists, management analysts, educational, network and computer systems administrators, school and vocational counselors, computer programmers and computer systems analysts.
