Denton is the country seat of Denton County and now hosts a population of around 120,000. The Oklahoma-Texas border is approximately 47 miles north of Denton and Dallas lies 49 miles southeast.
The University of North Texas, which is the largest university in Northern Texas, and Texas Woman's University are situated within the city of Denton and between the two of them host more than 45,000 students. The Texas Woman's University was initially a single-sex collage but in the year 1994 the institution became co-ed. Denton County was originally formed from a Texas land grant in 1846. Denton City was founded shortly after during the year 1857. The city was named after a pioneer and Texas militia captain, John B.
