Victoria is the county seat of Victoria County and now has a population of roughly 60,603. The Victoria Metropolitan Statistical Area, that consists of three separate counties, has a population of roughly 111,163.

The Gulf of Mexico is situated 30 miles out from the city. The city of Victoria is a bustling regional center for the "Golden Crescent," which is a seven-county region. More than 250,000 rely on the area for retail trade. The city is located a couple of hours away from Houston, Corpus Christi, Austin and San Antonio, that is the reason why it is called "The Crossroads."

The name Victoria originates from General Guadalupe Victoria, the very first president of independent Mexico. The city boasts two big schools: Victoria College and the University of Houston-Victoria. Victoria is also the cathedral city of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Victoria.

There are various places devoted to the arts in the city. Theatre Victoria has a season running from July to May wherein six productions are held. The Leo J. Welder Center has been recently renovated and is provides several live performances downtown. Several performances every year are also held by the Victoria Symphony Orchestra and Victoria Ballet.

Victoria is a city rich with historical information. Many museums are hosted in the city limits, including the Nave, the McNamara House, the Children's Discovery Museum, and the Museum of the Coastal Bend. The Museum of the Coastal Bend has numerous exhibits dedicated to featuring several important artifacts from the La Salle's colony during the 17th century.

Just 30 minutes from the city of Victoria are the Presidio La Bahia and Mission Espiritu Santo. La Bahia is considered to be the best preserved Spanish Presidio within the nation. A fantastic example of an early Spanish colonial church is Espiritu Santo.

The main cogs of the economy in Victoria are based around gas, petrochemical and oil production. Chemical plants and ranching take up secondary roles in the economy. There are several areas of employment in Victoria, including healthcare, educational services, manufacturing, construction, chemicals and mining. Roughly 29 percent of the workforce is involved with professional, management and related jobs whilst 26% of the labor force is involved with sales and office occupations.

The Victoria regions largest companies are the Citizen's Medical Center, Formosa Plastic, Detar Healthcare System, The Inteplast Group, Dow-Seadrift Operations, Calhoun ISD, Invista, Alcoa, H.E.B., University of Houston-Victoria, berry Plastics, Kasper Wireworks Metalworks/plating, Victoria College, Walmart Supercenter, Spherion, King Fisher Marine, First Victoria National Park and TX Dept. of Criminal Justice.

Much of the Victoria labor force has received college degrees since the majority of the popular jobs need a college degree. These comprise registered nurses, teachers, financial managers, chemical engineers, industrial engineers, social workers, and clinical and medical laboratory technicians.

The cost of living index in 2008 was ranked as 78.0, with the national average hovering around 100.
