The city of Harlingen, Texas is situated in the middle of the Rio Grande Valley about 30 miles from the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. Harlingen covers over 34 square miles in Cameron County, that makes it the second largest city within the county. The population is approximately 64,849. The city is a principle city of the Borwnsville-Harlingen Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Roughly four miles east of the city of Harlingen lies the Port of Harlingen. The Gulf Intracoastal Waterway is about 25 miles east of the port and stretches all the way from the Mexican border at Brownsville to St. Marks, Florida. More than 1,300 miles of protected waterway, 12 feet deep and 125 feet wide, are provided by the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway.

Originally, Harlingen was established in 1904 by Lon C. Hill. He named the city to honor Harlingen in the Netherlands. He made use of a large acreage of fertile land and created irrigation canals to draw farmers to help cultivate the land. The economy in the start was mainly dependent on agriculture, like for instance cotton and vegetables.

Harlingen over the years has built itself into a center for transportation and commerce. The populations increased significantly during the second World War, when military facilities were built in the city. The economy in the late 1980's was centered around citrus fruit, tourism, cotton production and grain.

There are several exciting attractions for everyone in the city of Harlingen. There are beautiful beaches situated on South Padre Island, the National Shrine of Our Lady of San Juan del Valley, and greyhound dog racing within Valley Race Park. There are some unique shops to be found in the Jackson Street Historic District, that is also the site of outdoor movie nights and various community events hosted by the city. Plazas from the Hispanic custom could be located at La Placita Diaz/Guiterrez Park, and concerts and theatrical performances are provided by the Harlingen Municipal Auditorium.

Because the city of Harlingen is situated at the convergence of two major flyways it makes an ideal location for tropical bird watching. Harlingen is home to some of the Great Texas Birding Trail locations, like the Harlingen Thicket Bird Sanctuary. Situated next to the amazing Laguna Madre is the Laguna Atascosa NWR. Santa Ana NWR also provides tram tours during the winter.

The Los Ebanos Preserve is amongst the most gorgeous places situated near Harlingen. The preserve includes many butterflies and birds in a great setting that includes several gardens and natural trails. The largest nature festival in the region, the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival, is situated here too. Other entertainment which can be found nearby consists of the Arroyo Queen tour and the Extravaganza Folklorica, that consists of dancing and music in addition to ethnic costumes.
