St. John's is the capital city of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It is located on the eastern section of the Avalon Peninsula on the island of Newfoundland. It is considered to be the most populated city in the Metropolitan Area, and is the second largest CMA in the Atlantic Provinces. St. John is the oldest English-established settlement within North America, and tradition credits the explorer, John Cabot for the city's name. John Cabot is the first European to sail into the harbor. In 1500, it was officially established as a community by Sir Humphrey Gilbert, who declared it an English settlement in 1583. The area has seen several transformations, particularly during the 20th century, where oil fields, service centres and modern export strengthened the economic output of the city of St. John's to a much higher level.
There are various attractions within the city of St. John's for visitors to enjoy. Signal Hill is a main attraction because it offers panoramic views of the city, the Atlantic Ocean and the port.
