The city of Santa Fe, serves as the states capital city, the county seat of Santa Fe County and is the states 4th biggest city. The name Santa Fe translates literally in Spanish to mean "holy faith." The city's full name when it was established was "La Villa Real de la Santa Fe de San Francisco de Asis" or "The Royal Town of the Holy Faith of St. Francis of Assisi"

The latest census during 2010 reported that Santa Fe's population was roughly 68,000 residents. The City of Santa Fe is the center of the Santa Fe MSA or Metropolitan Statistical Area. This area accounts for all of Santa Fe County and is additionally part of the bigger Santa Fe-Espanola Combined Statistical Area.

Originally, Santa Fe was occupied between the year 1050 and the year 1150 by various Pueblo Indian villages. Sometime after 900 C.E. one of the earliest known settlements within what is currently downtown Santa Fe was founded. A Native American group fashioned a cluster of homes which spread for half a mile to the south and to the west. The village was known as Ogapoge and the homes were centered on the location of the current Plaza. The Santa Fe River attracted inhabitants because it provided water to the people who were residing there.

The Santa Fe River was a year round stream up until the 1700s, although now it is considered just a seasonal waterway. During 2007, based on the conservation group known as American Rivers, the Santa Fe River was recognized as the nation's most endangered river.

In the year 1943, the town of Santa Fe served as the gateway to LANL or Los Alamos National Laboratory, that is a 45 minute drive from the city and since then, Santa Fe has been associated with technology and science. The Santa Fe Institute or also referred to as SFI was founded in the year 1984 so as to research complex systems within biological, physical, and economic and political sciences. The City of Santa Fe hosts such Nobel laureates as Philip Warren Anderson and Murray Gell-Mann, both for physics and Kenneth Arrow for economics. During 1994, the NCGR or also known as National Center for Genome Resources was founded to concentrate on research with bioscience, mathematics and bioscience.

Some of the key economic factors within Santa Fe include the State government and tourism. The city attracts a lot of tourists each and every year because of the year-round weather and the abundance of outdoor activities. There are numerous locations to enjoy hiking and a lot of skiing during the years of adequate snowfall. The City of Santa Fe is also home to various cultural activities. The chamber of commerce and the visitor bureau both offer tourist information.

The Plaza and the historic downtown places are mainly where most of the tourist activity happens. The Plaza consists of a one block square that is adjacent to the Palace of the Governors. This is the original seat of New Mexico's territorial government since the time of the Spanish migration. The Santa Fe International Folk Art Market happens on an annual basis during the 2nd full weekend of the month of July at an attraction area called "Museum Hill," that is the location of numerous art museums within Santa Fe. One more famous attraction area for both locals and visitors alike is the Canyon Road Arts area. It is home to various galleries.
