The city of Omaha, Nebraska is situated within the midwest part of the state. The city supports more than 400,000 inhabitants and serves as the county seat for Douglas County. The city is situated along the Missouri River, north of the mouth of the Platte River, which is roughly 30 km away. Omaha is the largest city within the Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area (population around 865,300) and the largest in the state of Nebraska. Initially, Omaha was settled by the Omaha Indians.
