Grand Forks (population 52,838) is a city in the state of North Dakota. It serves as the county seat of Grand Forks County. Greater Grand Forks, also called The Grand Cities, comprises Grand Forks and the twin city of East Grand Forks, within the State of Minnesota. The Grand Forks, ND-MN Metropolitan Statistical Area has a population of nearly 100,000.
Grand Forks is situated on the Red River banks within the Red River Valley. This region is a low-lying region which is susceptible to some flooding. The most recent large scale flood during the year 1997, was among the most severe since the year 1826. The early French fur traders named the town Les Grandes Fourches. It was established at the fork of the Red Lake River and the Red River by Alexander Griggs, a steamboat captain, and incorporated during the year 1881. Soon, agriculture flourished in the fertile valley soil.
These days, the city is dependent on various modern industries, such as health care, defense, manufacturing, food processing, scientific research and higher education. No single sector dominates the economy of Grand Forks. Altru Health System is the largest private employer of Grand Forks. The University of North Dakota, in downtown Grand Forks, is a major center of higher education, the oldest such institution in North Dakota State, and the biggest employer within the metro area. A huge percentage of Grand Forks area jobs are provided by federal and state government employers. West of Grand Forks is Grand Forks Air Force Base, which provides numerous jobs for both enlisted personnel and civilian workers. The city is accessed by Grand Forks International Airport and Grand Forks Air Force Base.
Major manufacturing companies located in the city produce aircrafts and wind turbines, amongst other products. Food processing businesses comprise J. R. Simplot Company. The North Dakota Mill and Elevator is a state-owned flour mill and is the biggest within the US. There are major call centers in Grand Forks. Locally owned companies include Alerus Financial, Home of Economy and Hugo's supermarkets.
Grand Forks boasts many fine cultural and sports places, like the Ralph Engelstad Arena, Chester Fritz Auditorium and Alerus Center. The North Dakota Museum of Art is amongst many art galleries.
