Asheville is a city in the western part of North Carolina State. With a population of about 83,318, it is the biggest city in the state and serves as the county seat of Buncombe County. Asheville is a part of the four-county Asheville Metropolitan Statistical Area, that has an estimated population of roughly 417,000. The city's land area is 40.9 square miles.

The city is situated in the Blue Ridge Mountains at the confluence of the Swannanoa River and the French Broad River. The area was originally inhabited by the Cherokee Indians at the time when Spanish explorer Hernando DeSoto arrived in the year 1540. DeSoto and his party of men brought with them diseases which infected the native inhabitants. Hence, the population was considerably lessened. The area was first called Morristown. In 1797 Morristown was renamed Asheville to honor the Governor of South Carolina, Samuel Ashe.

The town was a well known health resort throughout the 1890's. A tropical storm damaged a lot of the town in the year 1916, forcing a major flood. In the Civil War the majority of Asheville men were on the Confederates' side. The end of the Civil War brought severe economic difficulties to Asheville. The city slowly gained stability from the Depression Era through to the 1980's.

Today the city of Asheville is the heart of economic development for western North Carolina. Asheville's industries make furniture, textiles, electrical products and paper products. Healthcare, tourism, education, government and construction playing significant roles in the local economy. The city has a developing technology sector. Roughly 33% of the workforce is involved in management, professional and related jobs.
