The city of Gastonia, North Carolina are considered a suburb of the Charlotte Area. Gastonia is the third largest suburb of Charlotte behind Rock Hill and Concord. The city serves as the county seat of Gaston County and, with a population of approximately 71,059, is the largest city in the county. It is part of the Charlotte-Concord-Rock Hill Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The population of Gastonia has been increasing steadily. During the past ten years the population has grown by 8.2%. The city's total land area is 46.1 square miles - 13 percent of the total area of Gaston County.
The county of Gaston and Gastonia are surrounded by a terrain of hills and mountains. The areas highest elevation could be located at King's Pinnacle and Crowder's Mountain. These peaks could be located just a short drive from downtown Gastonia, located in Crowder's Mountain State Park. The Park attracts outdoor fanatics from all around the Carolinas. The city's economy has gone through difficulties over the last decade. A lot of layoffs and closures have happened. The corporate headquarters for Parkdale Mills, an international textile business, was situated within the city of Gastonia and operated two production facilities in the region before moving production outside the US.
