The city of Greenville, South Carolina is the sixth biggest city within the state with around 58,409 people. The Greenville-Mauldin-Easley Metropolitan Statistical Area has a population of roughly 636,990.

Serving as the seat of Greenville County, that is part of "The Upstate," that is an eight-county region of northwestern South Carolina. The city of Greenville has been ranked by Forbes Magazine as number two for "Best Small Places for Businesses and Careers." The city of Greenville is located along Interstate 85, halfway between the cities of Atlanta, Charlotte and Georgia.

The city of Greenville was founded during the year 1771 and was named Matinsborough after Royal Governor Josiah Martin. The name was later changed to Greenville honoring Revolutionary War hero Nathanael Greene. The economy of the city centered on the export of cotton during most of the 19th century. Afterward it developed a reputation as a main tobacco marketing and warehouse hub, and this identity continued until the 1960s. Greenville's small state-supported college, previously the East Carolina Teachers College, expanded and became East Carolina University and the ECU Medical School. Now, the economy of Greenville is generally based on education, medicine and international manufacturing. The city is a major economic and industrial hub in the Upstate. It is likewise the retail center of the eastern part of the state.

The city is diversified in terms of its manufacturing base. There are businesses making apparel, textiles, pharmaceuticals, machinery, transportation equipment and factored metals. Significant employers are Pitt County Memorial Hospital and East Carolina University.
