Burlington, North Carolina is situated within Guilford and Alamance counties, with the majority located in Alamance county. The population has increased significantly ever since 2000 when it had roughly 44,920 people. Now the population is more than 50,000. Burlington has a total land area of 21.3 square miles.
When the North Carolina Railroad Company built shops and offices in the area during the 1850s, the city was referred to as the Town of Company Shops. The shops and offices were built to support the repairing of the railroad. By 1886 the company had closed these businesses. The town was established in 1857 and named Burlington during the month of February 1887. During 1893 it officially became a city.
The city of Burlington and nearby region have many attractions, such as Tannenbaum Park, Burlington City Park, Alamance County Historical Museum, Alamance Battleground State Historic Site, Cedar Rock Park, Joe Davidson Park, and Glencoe Mill Village. Other parks comprise North Park, Robinson Park and Oakdale Town and Country Park. The many parks in and around the city of Burlington offer tourists and residents various outdoor activities. The company Honda Aero, which is a Honda subsidiary, is also planning to establish their corporate head office within the city of Burlington. The company will build a production facility worth approximately $27 million at the Burlington-Alamance Regional Airport. The plant will manufacture HF120 jet engines. Other Burlington companies consist of the operations head office for Gold Toe Brands, a sock manufacturer and the headquarters of Biscuitville, a regional fast food chain.
