Helena (population 28,180) is the state capital of Montana. It serves as the county seat of Lewis and Clark County, that has a population of 63,400. Helena is the main city in the Helena Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Jefferson and Lewis and Clark counties.

A group of prospectors called the Four Georgians, discovered gold in the year 1864, in a gulch of the Prickly Pear Valley. The discovery of gold led to the founding of a camp named "Last Chance". The population rapidly grew to more than 200 and during the fall of 1864 a group of local men met to establish a proper township, including the election of commissioners and the plan of the streets. Eventually, the committee chose a new name, Helena. The city has an historic downtown district with street names that evoke the gold rush era, like "Last Chance Gulch", the main street's name.

The city of Helena has enjoyed some economic stability throughout the years as it serves as the state capital. The county, state, and federal government jobs provide a lot of jobs for the cities inhabitants. Nearly 33 percent of Helena's labor force Consists of government positions. The city of Helena is situated within a region rich in lead and silver deposits, and mining is still a significant industry with plants which process minerals situated throughout the city.

The city's daily newspaper is the Independent Record. Sports teams consist of Helena Bighorns Tier III Junior A hockey team and Helena Brewers minor league baseball. Helena is serviced by Helena Regional Airport.
