Helena (population 28,180) is the state capital of Montana. It serves as the county seat of Lewis and Clark County, that has a population of 63,400. Helena is the main city in the Helena Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Jefferson and Lewis and Clark counties.
A group of prospectors called the Four Georgians, discovered gold in the year 1864, in a gulch of the Prickly Pear Valley. The discovery of gold led to the founding of a camp named "Last Chance". The population rapidly grew to more than 200 and during the fall of 1864 a group of local men met to establish a proper township, including the election of commissioners and the plan of the streets. Eventually, the committee chose a new name, Helena. The city has an historic downtown district with street names that evoke the gold rush era, like "Last Chance Gulch", the main street's name.
