Olathe is recognized as the cowboy capital since it served as a stopping point along the Oregon Trail, the California Trail and the Santa Fe Trail. The name of the community derived from the Shawnee word meaning beautiful. Dr. John T. Barton established the city of Olathe during the year 1857 and it became the county seat two years afterward. Kindness to travelers was the city's main purpose and main source of earnings. Local businesses and stores sprung up to cater to people heading westward. A popular resupply point for wagons was the Mahaffie House, that Olathe now operates as a registered historical place staffed by individuals in period costumes. Adding to the realism are farm animals and stagecoach rides. Re-enactments of the Civil War and the Wild West Days happen there.
The Adam Legler Barn Museum features a restored stone barn dating back to the year 1864. More local history can be discovered at the Harry S. Truman National Historic Site. Among the largest urban parks in the US, Swope Park is where visitors could tour all-around the Heart of America Golf Course.
Olathe has a well developed commercial and industrial base with such companies as Honeywell, ALDI, Grundfos, Husqvarna and Garmin. Farmers Insurance Group is a major employer. One more important source of employment is the Air Route Traffic Control Center (designated ZKC) administered by the United States Department of Transportation.
