The city of South Bend, Indiana gets its name as its location along St. Joseph River's southernmost bend. The city of South Bend serves as the county seat for St. Joseph County. The population of South Bend City is approximately 101,168 whilst the population of its Metropolitan Statistical Area is about 316,663. The Combined Statistical Area population is roughly 544,580. The city of South Bend is considered Michiana Region's economical center and is the 4th biggest city within Indiana State. Notre Dame, Indiana is situated just to the of the city and hosts the University of Notre Dame.

During 1865, South Bend City was incorporated as a city and after that developed as a really industrialized economy. This was largely because of certain pioneering businesses such as the Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Company. In the 19th century, the largest manufacturer of wagons was the Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Company and was amongst the only businesses which were able to successful transition to producing automobiles from making wagons. They had a ginormous part on the economy of the city until they were closed during the year 1963. Other significant businesses that played a part on the development of South Bend include the Birdsell Manufacturing Company, Oliver Corporation, the Singer Sewing Machine Company, the Bendix Corporation, Honeywell, and the South Bend Toy Company.

The economy of the city is rather diverse with much in the fields of wholesale and retail trade, education, government and healthcare. South Bend's biggest employer is the city of Notre Dame. Thus, education has a considerable impact on the city's economy. Local companies have partnered along with the university to further research and development on numerous projects. The 2nd biggest employer within the city is the Memorial Health System. Several other medical related businesses are situated in South Bend.

Manufacturing is another city industry which has played a significant part within the economy. Some of the various manufacturing sectors in the city includes transportation equipment, non-electrical machinery, plastic products and rubber products. AM General, the corporation that produces special purpose and Hummer military vehicles, has its head office in South Bend. It is amongst the largest employers within the city.

During the year 1842, the University of Notre Dame was founded by Very Rev. Edward Sorin, C.S.C and six Catholic brothers. Since then, the university has become an intrinsic part of South Bend's culture and economy.

The Studebaker National Museum features more than 114 years of automotive history. The collection also showcases all kinds of Studebaker products. These products range from the early Conestoga Wagon all the way to the last automobile that the company was able to make. During the year 1922, the Morris Performing Arts Center was opened. It has just been renovated and is now home to the Broadway Theatre League as well as the South Bend Symphony Orchestra. The South Bend Regional Museum of Art is located downtown in Century Center. It was established in the year 1996 and is home to more than 850 pieces of art work from different regional artists.
