Sylvan Lake is a town within central Alberta, Canada. It is situated 25 kilometres or 16 miles west of Red Deer City along Highway 11 or Highway 11A. It is situated on the southeast edge of Sylvan Lake, a 15 kilometre or 9.3 mile long freshwater lake, within Red Deer County.

The lake is a tourist location for individuals all over the province, bringing in approximately 1.5 million visitors each year. Popular tourist activities comprise swimming, sunbathing, water-skiing, and visiting the local Wild Rapids Waterslides.

The town of Sylvan Lake was first settled by French speaking immigrants from the United States and Quebec. Arriving in the year 1898 from Michigan, Alexandre Loiselle with his family first homesteaded the quarter section which later became the west side of the current Main (50th) Street and the businesses and homes directly toward the west.

In the start of the 20th century saw numerous Estonian and then Finnish settlers moving to the area to build homesteads toward the west and south of the Sylvan Lake settlement. Their arrival brought about the first business community in the area with a general store, a blacksmith, post office, a hardware store, restaurants, barber and more. The completion of the Canadian Northern line to Rocky Mountain House and Nordegg during the year 1912 and the parallel Canadian Pacific during the year 1914 opened the west country to settlement and resulted in the incorporation of the town of Sylvan Lake in the year 1913 under Mayor E. S. Grimson, a local hardware store owner. The anniversary of the founding of the town of Sylvan Lake is celebrated each year within Sylvan Lake as "1913 Days."

Believed to be amongst Canada's Top Ten Resort Hot Spots, Sylvan Lake is a thriving community that has seen significant growth during the past 10 years. No longer believed to be a seasonal community, based on the 2006 federal cencus, 86 per cent of houses are permanent household.

Implementation of the plan has resulted in amendments to regulations to provide flexible zoning to achieve the desired vision.
