Stony Plain is a huge town in rural Alberta, Canada, just west of Edmonton.
Stony Plain is a rapidly developing town with strong historical origins. It is located west of Spruce Grove and bounded by Parkland County. The town is governed by one mayor and six councilors. The area is dominated by agricultural and other resource-based business. The nearness of Stony Plain to Edmonton makes it attractive for a lot of travelers, servicing a surrounding population of over 60,000 people. All-around the town, there are a lot of colourful murals which depict figures and events of local history which are significant. These murals have earned it the nickname "The Town with the Painted Past." The town was initially referred to as Dog Rump Creek.
There are two probable origins of the town's name, one of which comes from the Stony people who camped within the area historically. The seconded possibility is Dr. James Hector, a geologist on the Palliser Expedition noticed boulders scattered across the area. The official name for the settlement was adopted in 1892.
Stony Plain celebrates Farmers' Days during the first week of June every year, together with the Kinsmen rodeo, the Farmer's Days Parade, fair grounds and a pancake breakfast. The town of Stony Plain likewise plays host to the Great White North Triathlon during the first week of the month of July. In summer season, Stony Plain hosts two major festivals. The first is the Blueberry Bluegrass and Country Music Festival, that is held in early month of August and is the largest bluegrass event within Western Canada. The second is the Cowboy Poetry and Country Music Gathering held during late month of August. In December, the town of Stony Plain sets up a huge Christmas tree on Main Street. The tree remains lit during the Christmas months. To be able to celebrate New Year's Eve, the town of Stony Plain holds its Family Fest event at the Rotary Park. Family Fest provides skating on the frozen pond, hot chocolate, and fireworks.
